Looking for maximum speed? Several factors, including variability in the plastic injection process, result in nearly all Pinewood Derby wheels (especially official BSA wheels) being out of balance. Even wheels that have been corrected or trued on a lathe are still out of balance due to the asymmetry of the lettering on the sidewalls. An out-of-balance wheel can rob the car of energy that could be used to propel it down the track.
Of the things that affect speed, balanced wheels are far down the list. However, if you're trying to reach your car's full potential, a Pinewood Derby wheel balancer will help you achieve your goal.
The Turbo Wheel balancer utilizes a custom, precision-machined pin with two conical features to precisely and concentrically hold and balance wheels with bore (axle hole) diameters ranging from 0.094 to 0.200 inches. Use the included tool to remove small amounts of material, allowing you to balance the wheel.
PLEASE NOTE: The Turbo Wheel balancer is a VERY sensitive tool. It takes time, patience, and practice to use correctly. It performs best with corrected or trued/lathed wheels. Stock wheels can often be so out of balance that it takes a significant amount of material removal (or material addition) to balance them.
