PLEASE NOTE: Scouting America (formerly Boy Scouts of America, or BSA) has updated the Pinewood Derby wheel molds. These new wheels began production in late 2025 and started appearing in kits in Spring 2026. The previous wheels (first produced in 2009) are still in circulation. We are offering both the new (2025) and older (2009) wheels. The main difference is the lettering on the outside of the wheel: the new wheels have “OFFICIAL” on the sidewall instead of “BSA,” which appears on the 2009 version. The new wheels have excellent spin characteristics, but are a bit heavier (approximately 0.35g more) than the old wheels. If you purchase modified wheels, we recommend using the old (2009) wheels unless your rules require wheels from the current year or a current kit, because of this weight difference.
These wheels retain ALL features and appearance of a stock BSA wheel, but have a significant amount of weight removed from the interior sidewall. They require less energy (due to a reduction in rotational inertia) to start rolling, which leads to faster starts and a savings in energy that can be used to propel the car down the track! SuperStocks are significantly faster than standard/kit wheels.
These are official Scouting America wheels FROM THE KIT! These wheels have imperfections in them. These defects are the result of fluctuations in the plastic injection molding process, as well as the advanced age of the wheel molds. As a result, the wheels are not perfectly round as intended, with high and low spots along the wheel tread and tread edge, as well as flaws in the inner and outer hubs. These can cause the car to hop slightly as it goes down the track, creating instability and reducing its speed. We have corrected these manufacturing imperfections, resulting in a much lighter wheel that is rounder and therefore much faster.
ALL contact surfaces of the wheel have been corrected/trued, including:
- Tread
- Inner tread edge
- Outer hub
- Inner hub
