Why use graphite over other lubricants for Pinewood Derby cars?
Graphite is one of the most popular lubricants used in Pinewood Derby. Primarily because it has one of the lowest coefficients of friction among all dry lubricants. However, not all graphite is created equal. Unlike the graphite available at most big-box stores, Turbo Boost Graphite is specifically formulated for use in Pinewood Derby.
Some purpose-made graphite contains a blend of additional additives such as tungsten disulfide or molybdenum; however, in actual racing conditions, these additives have HIGHER coefficients of friction, making their graphite blend suboptimal. For maximum performance, you want a high-purity, medium-flake graphite, such as that available from Turbo Derby.
