FAQ

What size drill bit is best for Pinewood Derby car axles?

A #43 drill bit is commonly used when drilling holes for BSA-style axles. Our Pinewood Derby wheel jigs are designed to guide these bits with pinpoint accuracy. A #43 drill bit is included with every Turbo Jig.

Can you use the slots that are already in the block, or can you drill new holes by hand?

Yes. However, if your rules allow, moving the axle hole locations helps with weight distribution.  While it is certainly possible to drill new holes by hand, the most effective (and therefore fastest) drilling results come from using precision. That’s where a Pinewood Derby wheel jig can make a world of difference. The Turbo Jig positions the axle holes optimally while ensuring proper alignment.

How do you make Pinewood Derby car wheels faster?

Reducing friction between the wheels, axles, and car body are one of the biggest sources of speed gains.  Use a Turbo Derby Wheel Preparation Kit and a Turbo Derby Axle Preparation Kit to make competition ready, pro-level wheels and axles!  Teflon (PTFE) tape is a great option to reduce friction between the wheels and car body!

What’s the difference between a Pinewood Derby axle jig and a drill jig?

An axle jig (like the Turbo Bender) is used to bend the axle a precise amount to use in a rail riding setup. A drill jig (like the Turbo Jig) is used to place and drill holes for the axles in the Pinewood Derby car block.
